  • Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. My topic is New Year Gift Money. During the Spring Festival, many students got a considerable sum of New Year Gift Money. What should we do with this money? Usually there are two alternatives: spend it or save it. Which is better? In my opinion, to save it is more sensible for us students.

First of all,as we all know, thrift has long been our tradition virtue. Even in ancient times, our ancestors already knew from their experience that it was easy to go from frugality to extravagance but different to go from extravagance to frugality. Once students get into the habit of spending money extravagantly, he may find it very different to stop doing so, and he may keep buying things like clothes of famous brand, imported stationery, or most updated cell phones.

Secondly, saving money prepares us for rainy days. There is an old saying witch goes like this: “Human fortunes are as unpredictable as the weather.” It means that we students can never know what may happen to us next. One day we may be badly in need of money. If that happened, our savings can help us a lot and see us through the hard time.

On the other hand, spending may result in students’ unhealthy competition of wealth. Rich students with a lot of New Year Gift Money may spend extravagantly, buying all sorts of luxury goods, while students from poor families don’t even have proper meals. Due to vanity, some poor students may try to find ways to make money quickly. Sometimes they may even take the risk of breaking the law, or committing crimes.

Some people may argue that when money is deposited in a bank, it will lose its basic function. Actually, it will not. When our state Treasury lacks money, the money deposited in the bank may help our country overcome financial difficulties.

Saving money benefits not only the students themselves, but also our country. So we should start saving money now.

That's all. Thank you very much for listening.
