Haiti, formally called the Republic of Haiti, is an island country in the Carribeans, with an area of 27,000 sqare kilometers. Haiti is a tropical country, with a very hot climate all year round and heavy rain every June.
Haiti is an underdeveloped country, and nearly half of the population live a life of less than one US dollar a day. The rate of illiteracy reaches as high as 78.1% of the whole population.
The north part of the country belongs to the tropical rainforest climate, and the south the tropical savannah climate. The annual average temperature fluctuates between 22—28℃.
January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit by a strong earthquake rated 7.0 on the Richter scale, with a devastating effect due to the shallowness of the seismic origin. The epicenter was only 16km away from Port du Pincess, the country's capital.
The strong earthquake caused a great number of casualties, with an alleged final death toll reaching to 500,000. The number of population who are effected by the earthquake is up to three million. The consequence of the earthquake severed in Haiti because this country lacks of the rescue facilities and international rescue teams were not able to function in time. The social order and security was out of countrol becasue of the shortage of supplies, and criminal actions such as looting and plundering have appeared in the streets of Haiti.
