例A：The old man carries an umbrella whenever he goes out for a walk.

例C：However hard I work, there is more to be done.

解说 例A的“whenever”等于“at any time then; no matter when（无论在什么时间,无论何时）”的意思.例B的“wherever”等于“at, in, to whatever place（无论在或到任何地方）”的意思.“however”在例C的意思是“in whatever degree（无论到什么程度）”,在例D的意思是“in whatever way（无论是什么方法）”.
“whenever, wherever, however”都不需先行词.
注：①“Whenever”在现代英语常用“every time/each time”来取代.
例：She bites her finger every time she is thinking about something.

“Where ever…?”只用在问句,同时常常是简短的单句,表示惊讶或疑惑.现代英语也常看到把“Where ever…?”写成“Wherever…?”,应该避免.
