When many of us think of trees, we see colorful Fall leaves, decorated Christmas trees, places for birds to nest, sources of shade and parts of scenic vistas. Others may see windbreaks, firewood, paper products and building materials. Even though trees provide us with a myriad of products and services, they are also remarkable for their ability to solve a wide array of pollution issues. They help to control greenhouse gases and lessen the urban heat island effect; trees (and their leafy canopies) reduce the impact of heavy rain on soil, lessening the effects of runoff and erosion; they help to curtail flooding; they cleanse the air and water; and they significantly buffer sound.
