即是接连词
(1)放在dependent clause(子句﹖)的前面
与主句连接
在原帖的句子中
意思上(不是语法)是可以用 whereas
因为有‘相反’的意思
但语法上就有错误
请细看(1)
whereas是用於子句上
而子句应当有(a)主语及(b)动词
Whereas their friend Sean,who often behaved as if he had only one day
left to live,...
如果这是子句的话
主语将会是 their friend Sean
但动词却没有
who(主语) 取用 behaved (动词)
he (主语) 取用 had (动词)
所以除了用unlike来取代 whereas之外
这里还有另一个简单的修改
就是取消 who
Whereas their friend Sean often behaved as if he had only one day left
to live,...
那麼
Sean (主语) 取用了 behaved (动词)
变成了一个原整的子句
