Among Hemingway’s writings,the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls occupies an important place.Haven giving up the nihilism he one embraced in his early years,Hemingway built up new confidence both in himself and society.He actively delved into practices in society,in which he found the real material for his novel.He created a new form of narration with his space art,which was different from his former writing style.In his new writing,he used the space art skill and properly handled the relations among the natural space,realistic and psychological spaces.With the natural space as the basis,he turned it into a realistic one through magnifying the subject matter,and opened his psychological space through an extension to the inner world of the characters.With his calm viewpoint and smooth writing style,Hemingway revealed the temporary perplexion,blankness,melancholy,grief,desperation and indignation in the depths of the protagonist’s heart,accordingly embodied the value of the character as well as the significance of life,and simultaneously fully demonstrated to us his remarkable talent of art.In the novel,the whole story happened in a short span of only three days,the time; the activities’ space was very narrow--,the activities took place on the mountain except when expect Andre went to the headquarters to send a message; there were few important characters,just four direct (upright?,or simple good guys) persons and one villain.But Hemingway used the special space art skill to make the characters relationship close and form the pattern of “three points in a line”.We can tell the characters’ features and their relationship,the clear pattern of character,the fullness of the novel and the complex of characters at a new height.In For Whom the Bell Tolls,Hemingway always put the characters in question into social life’s horizontal and history’s vertical,through describing life’s surface and depth,usually with additional touches from his imagination.He broke the characters’ natural timeline and space limit,put their history,reality and future together,formed complex contradiction and countless relationship between characters into a net,used time to express the development of the story and used characters to form contradiction.In For Whom the Bell Tolls,the space of the created characters was very narrow,but because Hemingway was good at putting characters into change,making the relationship of characters and the contradiction more complex before breaking the limits of space.For example,the contradiction of Robert Jordan and Pablo was the basis contradiction that runs through the whole story,the process of transformation was expanded around the contradiction that before and after destroyed the iron bridge,the developing of the story was expanded around some time point,and formed the “harmony—intensity—harmony—intensity” cycle.
