楼下几楼都直接把would理解成will的过去式,这理解太片面了(可能和我们的英语教材有关)
would放在表示过去的句子中使用,最常见的情况是在你想说的话里,would属于情态词(中文好像应该这么叫,英文是modal),用来表示频率(有点类似于词组used to),比如Almost every day in the summer I would walk through the field. 这里虽然发生在过去,但would是用来修饰不断重复发生的动作,所以它其实和过去式没有关系.在现代英语中,情态词是没有时态的.换句话说,不管啥时间发生的,都应该用would.
另外,要指出一点,would可以表示“过去的未来”:比如考虑以下的例子
He failed in his first test as a politician and yet, a mere ten years later he would become the leader of his country. (句子的时间点是在过去,但从那10年以后,相对于"现在"还是过去,就仍旧用would)这时候would其实是will的过去式
此外,还有虚拟和条件语句用would吧以及表示礼貌的用语(见例子),但这些情况下would/wouldn't都不存在时态的概念(tenseless)
