WASHINGTON,Jan.14 (Xinhua Wang Jiansheng) International Monetary Fund Managing Director Horst Koehler said here 14 days,to reduce poverty in the 21st century,mankind's most pressing challenges.He called on developed countries to take concrete action to support developing countries efforts to reduce poverty.Koehler is on the same day the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank on poverty reduction strategies at the international conference made the call.He said the UN Millennium Development Goals set does seem ambitious,but as long as poor countries and the international community to take coordinated action and perseverance,these goals can be realized.Keller believes that efforts to reduce poverty in developing countries to be successful,this effort must be based on "self-help" basis,especially in poor countries to work in the country to achieve peace,democracy and good governance.He pointed out that continued strong economic growth is essential for poverty reduction and economic growth prospects of poor countries depend on the ability to release the creativity of its people.This requires not only investment in manpower and infrastructure,also need to correct macroeconomic policies and sound institutions,in particular,have a private sector investment and promotion to encourage their integration into the global market economy.Keller believes that the current global poverty has the most important asset is the developing countries to address the issue of political will and determination.However,Koehler stressed that poor countries need external assistance to ensure that achieve rapid poverty reduction and sustainable progress.The international community must provide to poor countries "more resolute,more rapid and more comprehensive support." He strongly urged developed countries to increase official development assistance to developing countries and achieve the United Nations as developed countries,official development assistance accounted for 0.7% of GNP target.He also urged developed countries to open their markets to developing countries and phasing out of agriculture,processed foods,textiles and clothing and light industry areas such as subsidies for manufactured goods.In 1999,the World Bank and the IMF report has presented a poverty reduction strategy,aimed at promoting poverty reduction in poor countries,while the 4-day International Conference on poverty reduction strategies of this initiative is to assess the results achieved so far and challenges,and listen to all views and to enhance the positive impact of this initiative.According to the World Bank and IMF poverty reduction strategies in poor countries the report submitted by the latter grant will provide preferential loans and debt relief.World Bank President James Wolfensohn in his speech pointed out that poverty reduction strategies developed by the developing countries in the eradication of global poverty and enhance global security and peace is essential that the international community must take concrete measures to improve the poverty reductionstrategic impact on the poor、
