The stereotypical Northerner:
Is taller and bigger
Has small,slit-like,and/or slanty eyes with single eyelids (i.e.an epicanthal fold)[1]
Has a longer rugged face (possibly with considerably more facial hair than southerners)
Has lighter skin [2]
Speaks a northern Mandarin dialect
Eats wheat-based food rather than rice-based food [3]
Is loud,loyal,boisterous,warm-hearted,open,and prone to drunkenness and "thunderbolt" displays of emotion,such as anger
The stereotypical Southerner:
Is shorter and smaller
Has a smooth,round face
Has almond shaped eyes with double eyelids [4]
Has darker skin [5]
Speaks a southern dialect such as Wu,Hakka,Yue (Cantonese),Xiang or Min
Eats rice-based food rather than wheat-based food [6]
Is clever,calculating,wealthy,hardworking,and prone to "mincemeat" displays of emotion,such as brooding melancholy
In fact,people of South China tend to resemble other Southeast Asians more than they do North Chinese.[7]
Note that these are very rough stereotypes,and are greatly complicated both by further stereotypes by province (or even county) and by real life.
The difference between the northern and the southern Chinese
I'm a man who has come to Beijing for nearly a year from the Southern China.I found that the nothern Chinese had a big difference with the southern Chinese in working.The northern Chinese pay more attention to the manner,the procedure of working,and your attitude to the work,but not the ability.Some may know that the southern Chinese are usually pepperboxes.What they care most is not the manner,the procedure,nor the attitude,but the result.You are great and capable since you have finished the job quite well and so quickly.
Some of my southern friends have the same feeling with me.I don't know how do the northerners think about the southerners.And I also really wonder what kind of working style should I take?To be sitting at a chair pretending you are woking hardly or to finish your work as quickly as you can and take a break as you like.
I'm not here condemning northerners.I think the people from all over the world are equal,no matter where you are from.
