chance在这里的意思是"可能性",那么自然后面同位语从句的情态动词就应该也用表示"可能性"的may
至于may和can的区别,may和can都是可以表示有可能、可能性的,但是may程度更小,显然用在这里更合适(一般这种探索之后有新发现的可能性确实不大嘛).
