  • Is Yao Ming Too Nice To Be a star?

    Dear Editor,

I am writing in reply to the article about Yao Ming. The passage mainly tells that the Houston Rockets player Yao Ming,a selfless and kind person, wasn't used to the way of playing basketball there at first. Thus, the coach was a little disappointed at him.

I like the fact that the article draws attention to the title "Is Yao Ming Too Nice To Be a Star?" In fact, the title is really attractive. When I saw it,I couldn't help reading on.

I would like to say something about the difference between Chinese and American in basketball.US players are aggressive and want the ball all the time.It seems that they are "selfish" and "rude".Instead,Chinese are selfless and kind, they often pass the ball to teamates.Does it mean Chinese athletes can't compare with US players?Absolutely not.In my opinion, the reason why Chinese do so is that they has been brought up and trained in this way.

In a word, teamwork is important.I believe that Chinese sportsmen and women will realise their dream with the effort.

    Yours sincerely,

    Ann

    Dear Editor,

I am writing in reply to the article about Yao Ming, who certainly deserve to be called the outstanding player of his generation in China and be full of selfless and kind.

Different countries have different cultures.China has always been a community-oriented because unity is strength. But America may have the most individual-oriented culture. So the reason why Yao can’t be a star in NBA is in his Chinese cultural background.

As a member of NBA,if Yao wants to be success in NBA,he must learn to be a little more selfish and impolite and show off slam dunks more than pass the ball to teammates.

However,no one knows whether a disciplined,team-oriented strategy or a creative and individual-oriented one is more likely to produce wins.Yao is player of NBA.He should accommodate the culture of America so that he could be a star in NBA.

In the end,I agree with Yao is too nice to be an America star. The most important reasons are cultural values.

    Dear Editor,

I am writing in reply to the article about Yao Ming which appeared in your newspaper yesterday.I like the fact that the article draws attention to that China is producing world class sportsmen and women like Yao Ming. However,I would like to say something about Yao Ming's attitude. In my opinion, the reason why he is so "nice" is because that is what the situation was like when he played in China.Inthe Shanghai Sharks, the whole team played for him and he never had to ask for the ball -- he dominated every game.I believe that Chinese sportsmen and women are as good -- and often better -- than players from other countries, but we have a natural idea of politeness and team play rather than the individual "star" status which is typical of world basketball and soccer.

    Yours sincerly,

    Pete
