What the US committed to, I suppose, concerns the basic idea and belief of America, which were proposed at the earliest beginning and layed the foundation of the nation, symbolized mainly by the rights of man and the success of liberty.
It also serves as a sort of motive source that drives that country towards the world's mightiset power all along.
