Through extensive reading,an English learner can enlarge his or her word power.A large vocabulary,as we all know,is an important hallmark of a successful English learner.More essentially,learning vocabulary through reading is different from learning words through rote memorization of vocabulary textbooks.Words learned through reading are more likely to persist in the memeory and more likely to be truly acquired by the learner since they are learned in context,not in isolation.As a linguist (whose name is at the tip of my tongue) wisely pointed out,words are not meaningful until they are used in context.Therefore,if you are grappling with poor word power,why not follow my advice,pick up an English book and start reading?
