The LiFePO4 cathode material was prepared using
a co-precipitation method in de-ionized water at
room temperature. Aqueous solution of (NH4)2Fe
(SO4)2 _ 6H2O and H3PO4 was added to aqueous solution
of LiOH. After stirring 10 min with blowing
nitrogen gas into the solution through a tube, a thick
mixture of a green color deposit and a solution was
obtained, then washed with the de-ionized water and
separated by the centrifugal separator. The deposit was
dried in vacuum oven at 80 _C. After drying, the powder
was mixed with 5 wt% high surface area carbon black
and pressed into a disk-shaped pellet. The carbon black
was added to enhance the electronic conductivity and
reduce the particle size [12]. The pellet was put inside the
beaker filled with granular activated carbon (Aldrich,
20–40 mesh), and the beaker was placed inside the microwave
oven (650 W). After a few minutes microwave
irradiation the olivine phase LiFePO4 was obtained
without reductive gas flow. The basic idea of this heat
treatment is that the activated carbon is the microwave
absorber. If the activated carbon absorbs microwave,
the activated carbon will heat the precursor rapidly and
make reductive atmosphere by carbon oxidation reactionsreactions
simultaneously. Therefore, the heat treatment time
can be very short and no additional inert or reductive
gas is needed.
