If you want to look good in pictures, taking selfies might not be your best choice anymore. According to a new study, people appear more attractive when they are part of a group than when they are on their own.
Social scientists at the University of California have done an experiment. In the experiment, researchers asked many college students to rate the attractiveness of people in group photographs. It turned out that, on average, people in the group photographs were rated about 5.5 percent more attractive than when they were presented alone. That was not a huge difference, but every penny counts.
The reason for this is a theory called "the cheerleader effect". It refers to the idea that people look more attractive when they are viewed among others, compared with being viewed as individuals. The visual system of human tends to see objects as a whole. When we lay our eyes on a group of people, each individual is averaged out. Therefore the less attractive features on the faces seem more attractive than they are viewed in isolation.
