WindCon - Wind condition monitoring system

In recent years modern wind turbine generators have grown to become true power plants. Plants that create sufficient energy to contribute to our modern way of life and plants that generate a profit for you as an owner or operator. The energy you deliver is clean and inexhaustible.

To achieve this, the giant rotor blades must be kept turning while downtime must be reduced to a minimum. A WindCon condition monitoring system or other preventive maintenance systems, could support you in reaching higher levels of performance and reliability. The SKF WindCon System provide you with the complete overview of the wind energy park and its mechanical condition every day - every hour - every minute. It also equips you with the knowledge you need in order to maximize every opportunity to carry out normal or urgent maintenance.

The SKF WindCon system is specially designed to meet the tough demands of the offshore wind turbine market, and it can of course operate on shore as well.

SKF WindCon is certified by Germanischer Lloyd.

The SKF WindCon system enables you to:

·Improve overall uptime of the wind turbine

    ·Enhance maintenance timing and efficiency

    ·Reduce the overall maintenance cost

·Detect small problems before they lead to major breakdowns

·Gather statistical data to investigate component and system trends

SKF's offers widest range of solutions for the wind industry

SKF's new patented seal designs and centralised lubrication systems have increased the range of solutions to a unique position in the industry. No other company can offer customers this degree of dedicated support from a single source.

For application on all parts of turbine, SKF's products and solutions give customers reliable operational performance in onshore or offshore applications.

    Among the SKF range are;

Centralised lubrication systems; world leading technology from Willy Vogel AG, who joined the SKF Group in 2004, is now available. This technology is already installed on many turbines from many different manufacturers.

Bearing seals; new patented slewing bearing seals that combine special design features and special additives avoid grease leakage and ingress of water, and have excellent resistance to degradation from ozone and the Sun's ultra violet radiation.

SKF WindCon; the industry's leading condition monitoring system measured by the number of systems installed. It provides 24 hour/day monitoring of key turbine machinery allowing inspections or repairs to be planned during normal maintenance. This prevents extremely costly unexpected breakdowns due to mechanical unbalance, misalignment, gear damage, bearing damage, resonances, electrical problems etc Remote monitoring via Internet or GPRS makes it ideal for offshore as well as onshore application. It has highly developed analysis capability and can be easily customized or expanded for a specific turbine or operator's needs

Gearbox bearings; SKF Explorer bearings are available in all major design executions. These bearings have been developed using the results of very advanced design and material studies. Test have shown these bearings to be a new performance class of rolling element bearings that provide a substantial improvement in key operational parameters relevant to the bearing type and its typical applications.

Mainshaft bearings; Double row taper rolling bearings, CARBÒ toroidal roller bearings, spherical roller bearings, and taper roller bearings are available for all sizes of turbine including the largest so far built; the 5MW turbines.

Pitch and Yaw bearings; Depending on the application these are single or double row ball bearing slewing rings with a high carrying capacity. They are preloaded to avoid false brinelling damage and the yaw bearing can be provided with an integrated gear ring for designs applying direct drive.

Bolts, couplings and locknuts; Hydrocam bolt tensioners provide reliable and safe bolted assemblies and prevent the risk inaccurate tightening. Special OK Couplings connect gearboxes to the turbine mainshaft and can reduce the time to mount or dismount by a factor of 5 compared to some alternatives. HMS locknuts are patented systems for very easy and fast locking of bearings in position. They can be locked in any position around the shaft and there is no problem with fretting corrosion when dismounting. HMS locknuts are used on the largest turbine so far in operation; the REpower 5MW turbine.

Tailored Solutions that involve Novel Bearing and Condition Monitoring Systems.

    Summary

In the next few years, power generation from wind farms is set to grow significantly. Within 20 years, as much as 10% of the world's electricity needs could be provided by this form of power generation. Wind power is seen as environmentally sustainable, and major advances have been made in the economics of wind power generation. The latest developments have seen the size of individual generating units rise to 5 MW, and signifi cant advances have been made in terms of reliability and low maintenance, which is crucial for wind turbines, which are often sited in inhospitable, remote locations, including offshore. SKF has become a major supplier to this sector, having developed key elements in the turbine itself.
