Kindergarten is now a regular part of many elementary schools in the United States.

But when the first kindergarten was started in Germany in 1837, few people noticed.

Frederich Froebel, who started the class, was a man with a new idea. He did not agree with those who had started the other “infant school” of the time. In those schools, the young students had to work hard. But Froebel felt that young children could learn many things by playing..

Kindergarten is a German word meaning “garden of child.” Froebel wanted his kindergarten to be a place where children could enjoy learning. Most people thought that Froebel was wrong. They believed that children should stay at home until they were old enough to study.

Today, educators think that Froebel’s ideas were partly right and partly wrong. Very young children can work hard at learning and they should also have more chances than they can at home. In fact, children as young as three can learn school subjects.

Always popular with parents, kindergartens are now thought to be a necessary part of any school. Only half of the nation’s five-year-olds are going to kindergarten. Before long, all children this age will be in school. Some states areas even making plans to provide free public kindergartens for all-and-four-year-olds.
