The word “hello” may be used(被使用)more often than any other one in the English language.Everybody in the United States use the word again and again and every day of the week.
The first thing you hear when you pick up the phone is “hello”.If the caller is not an English,he may say,“Are you there?” The American inventor,Thomas Edison,is said to be the first person to use “hello” in the late 1800’s,soon after the invention(发明)of the telephone.
At first people greeted(打招呼) each other on the telephone with “Are you there?” Because they were notsure the machine could really send voices.
