TheResearch Progress of Mammals’ Molecular Mechanism of Iron Homeostasis
Abstract:
Ironis the essential trace element in the body.It involves with the synthesis
of hemoglobin, myohemoglobin, the composition of a variety of enzymes and
function performances; this is of vital importance to the maintenance of life
and health.About one quarter of the world’s population are under the threat of
suffering from iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. Moreover, there
are also problems of too much iron in the body. For example, hereditary hemochromatosis which is mainly caused by pathological changes due to high ferric ion accumulation in visceral
organs, the morbidity rate is as high as 1/200 in Europe and Americas, even in China
there were reports of this disease. At the later stages of hemochromatosis,it
usually induces hypofunction of the liver, pancreas and the heart.Too little or
too much iron can caused serious harm to health, the body needs a complex and
sophisticated control system to maintain the balance of iron homeostasis. The
metabolism of iron mainly includes intestinal absorption, liver storage, blood
transferring, macrophage recycling and body cell utilization.Over the past
decade or so,it has been the “golden age” of research on the metabolism of
iron and many genes related to the metabolism of iron homeostasis were
successively discovered. This paper summarizes the progress of researches in
the field of iron metabolism in mammals for the past few years, and conducts a preliminary
discussion on the existing problems of iron homeostasis metabolism,so as to provide
reference for the understanding and further in-depth researches on the molecular
mechanism of iron metabolism.
