French drains, geocomposite
drains and/or open-graded drainage layers (OGDL) and by sloping the subgrade. In
Ontario the subgrade is sloped at 3% for most types of highway sections. In #at land-
scape areas the edge drains are required to be installed with a minimum gradient of
0.1% (1000H:1V). To assess the e!ectiveness of the Ontario practice, a research con-
tract was established (`Performance of Geotextile-Based Hydraulic Pavement Sys-
temsa) between Queen's University and MTO. The representatives of the University

included members of the Royal Military College of Canada. The project involved "eld
investigation of several sites (six report herein), and included exhumation of edge
drains and the surrounding granular materials and their testing in the laboratory.
