If I were the boss
Today I will begin my speech with an interesting conversation between an employee and his boss.
“But I am good for something,” pleaded a young man whom a merchant was about to discharge for his bluntness.
“You are good for nothing as a salesman,” said his boss.
“I am sure I can be useful. Only do not put me away. Try me at something else. I know I can not sell. But I can make myself useful somehow.” persisted the young man.
So, finally he was placed in the counting-house, where his aptitude for figures soon showed itself, and in a few years he became not only chief cashier in the large store, but an outstanding accountant.
If I were the boss, I would bring everyone’s ability into full play. A man out of place is like a fish out of water. Its gills have no use. They are only hindrances. And the fish can do nothing but escaping from the difficult situation. But as soon as the gills feel the water, they mean something.
A man out of place is not half a man. He always feels unconfident, exhausted and depressed. So how can he pay attention to his work and how can my company develop itself quickly. But by contrast, men who are in their place are happy, cheerful, energetic and fertile in resources. The days are all too short for them. All their gifts give their consent to work, says “yes” to his occupation. They are men; they respect themselves because all their powers are at play in their natural sphere. That is just why I would bring everyone’s ability into full play.
Now, my dear friend I would like to ask you several questions. Do you manage to get a living but have lost the creation, energy and enthusiasm which are as natural to man as breathe? Do you work just for supporting yourself and your family but not because you can not help it? Do you work hard but mechanically and without heart? Do you always realize it is the dinner-time but actually it is tow hours later? The last one, do you constantly look at your watch and think of your salary? If your answer is “yes”, on one hand I am sorry to say you are just the person out of place. But on the other hand why not come to my company, because I am a boss who will make the best use of everyone. No talent is to be wasted here. And believe me that you are just the talent when in your place. As the old Chinese saying goes that swift horse are usually found but not the same as “Pak Lok" whose Chinese name is Bole (the person who has good judgments to spot ‘Long Distance Running Horse’.), I will be the modern “Pak Lok”.
I will be fair-minded to everyone. There is no good or bad university, no male or female, no old or young, even no experienced or inexperienced.
The personality and the interests will be my top concern. What can I do to put the right person in the right position? Here are the procedures. First, do some test such as the MBIT and some games to know your general characters? Second, go though the famous Holland Vocational Preference Inventory to measure your types and match it with a list of the occupation we offered. Third, you will get together with the experts of the human resources department to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of every job on the list to see which really fits you. Fourth, you will be given three months to get along
with the job you have chosen. If you think it is the place you have dreamed of, the go ahead. If not, change it. The last and the most important, I will provide you with a large stage on which you can make a good use of your ability, knowledge and creation and fulfill your dream. If you are good enough I will send you to auniversity to improve yourself.
Werner · Siemens hold such creed: only proper talents can create great career. And the employees in my company are all proper talents and I believe they can create a great career .That is my company! Here we are all brothers and sisters and we work for interests and our dreams!
So If I were the boss, I would bring everyone’s ability into full play.
