GM's main technical focus is on the equipment of device and monitoring technology.Since 2000,monitoring technology (residues,gas,catalyst),spare parts,sealing material,MEA have became the focus of General Motors research and development.It owns core technology patents in the MEA,and also a key patent in the bipolar plate technology.
From analyzing the PEMFC technology road maps and its market,the experts proposed a vision of the development of PEMFC technology as below:
a) The choice of catalyst and electrolyte
Currently PEMFC catalyst is noble metal Pt,but the cost is high due to its scarceness.The most commonly used Nafion membrane also faces similar cost issues [4] .These kind of problems are our major concern regarding the business development of PEMFC.However,future research is to reduce the current amount of catalyst and membrane,an alternative way is to develop new catalysts and proton exchange membrane.
b) Development of core parts of MEA
The results show that,preparation of MEA impacts directly on proton exchange membrane fuel cell capability.It improves the gas diffusion layer material and preparation process,and it also enhances the catalyst utilization [5].
c) Hydrogen production methods and the hydrogen storage device
Hydrogen is the core fuel of fuel cells.It ensures fuel cells can supply continuous power,so provision of hydrogen become the most important question.Based on currently alloy material,adding trace elements,changing the alloy composition or changing the alloy structure to improve the alloy properties are the methods of resolving this issue.Developing new alloys is also a major trends.The form of storage of hydrogen to ensure the security of electricity supply equipment can be another severe test before commercializing fuel cells.
d) Treatment of residual waste
In the alcohol regas process,the CO gas generated will lead to catalyst poisoning.This happens when the process prevents hydrogen dissociative adsorption,resulting lowers fuel cell efficiency.Develop the residual waste devices and anti-CO catalyst are the two current known ways to solve this problem.
e) User-oriented
User feedback reflects the success of product commercialization.General Motors,Toyota and other companies have carried out their development and changes based on user experiences and feedbacks.Following this legacy,products with high customer satisfaction are made,which results more business opportunities and vitality.
